Project Overview
This new £48M Integrated Waste Management Facility (IWMF) for Southwark Council is being operated by Veolia Environmental Services as part of a 25 year PFI contract. It includes a Materials Recovery Facility and a Mechanical Biological Treatment Facility, a public Reuse and Recycling Centre and an Education and Visitor Centre. This project won the LetsRecycle.com Award for the Excellence in the category of Innovation in Design of a waste management Facility, and the Considerate Constructors Silver Award.
Spanwright were chosen by NJ Doyne, to supply Bespoke Bio Filter Grid Plates element of the treatment facility which allows biological waste to compost at a greater rate.
Project Solution
SpanWright designed bespoke precast concrete moulds for this project. These moulds were created using existing production technologies and were made to the highest quality standards. The Biofilter floor / Grid Plates were manufactured, stocked and delivered on a rolling program directly to the site. The plates once installed, provide a perforated/ventilated floor where the odorous air is forced from beneath the waste. This air then gets filtered as its passes up through a layer of organic material resting on the plates. The filtered air is then converted by microbes into carbon dioxide and water.
