Project Overview
Spanwright have supplied roofing solutions for a number of reservoir upgrades and refurbishments. The reservoir roof for Kidderpore Reservoir in Hampstead, North-West London is one such example. Spanwright were commissioned by NJ Doyne Ltd to manufacture and supply bespoke beams as well as prestressed hollowcore slabs. The 150 year old reservoir had been redundant for several years having previously been replaced in 1963 with a new roof. The existing aluminium ventilated roof had aged and was ready for replacement with a secure and sustainable concrete alternative.
Product Solution
The existing layout consisted predominantly of block columns in a 5.8m x 5.8m grid. Spanwrights Design Engineers specified a 450x400mm beams with a 65mm diameter hole at each end to dowel and grout securely in place. 2500m² of 150mm prestressed hollowcore flooring spanned between the 72 concrete beams. Open cores were required to accommodate lacer bars and tie steel to be cast in place on site ensuring a completely rigid solution.
10 stainless steel hanger brackets were specified by Spanwrights design team and supplied along with the concrete flooring to form five access points required for personnel, equipment, sensors and ventilation.
An interesting aspect of this project is that GBM, the Contracted Consulting Engineers, made use of laser technology and innovative BIM (Building Information Modelling) to design and test the the improvements prior to work commencing. Once all the relevant data was added to the construction programme, the model was used to demonstrate the course of improvements in time and space to help visualise the build programme and also minimise health & safety risks.
This reservoir facility now provides 11,000 homes and businesses in the local area with a clean and reliable source of water.
